Vespers at Lourdes is a substantial encounter with the Living God–experienced primarily in Eucharistic adoration, chanted psalms, and profound silence–supplemented by intellectual formation and fraternal merrymaking that is worthy of the demanding schedule of thriving young professionals of the Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA.
In an order to respond to the call to evangelize both those in and out of the Church, a group of young professionals in Minneapolis gathered together at Our Lady of Lourdes parish. This young adults group knew first and foremost that in the chaos of our world’s technology and advertisements surrounding us at every turn, an organized opportunity to gather as a group in silence to pray was of immense importance. Secondly, recognizing that if the faith is to be something more than an emotional feeling that is communicated to others, it needs to be rooted in the mind.
This night needed to be a substantial encounter with Truth that is worthy of the precious time of a young adult who is pressed with the commitments of work and family.
With these things in mind, Vespers at Lourdes began. The evenings begin with chanted evening prayer, also known as Vespers. This is an ancient tradition of the Church (one inherited from the Jews) in which the Psalms of David are recited before the Blessed Sacrament. It is in this segment, that an opportunity for prayer and silence is offered to the professionals of the Twin Cities.
Following Vespers and some brief time for prayer, the evening continues with a free will offering bar with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. During this time, there is a short presentation of living out the Catholic faith in today’s world. Our speakers have included medical doctors, lawyers, parish priests and university professors offering sage advice and intellectual formation in a world often devoid of common sense.

Our hope is to provide an encounter with the Lord in the living Tradition of the Catholic Faith that our souls so desperately need and to follow that up with a fraternal environment to learn from others and simply grow in community. We exist to show others that there is a coherent, Catholic way of looking at reality and living life. Our expectations are high, our format is efficient, and our program is designed to elevate the experience of the Faith.
